GoPro has always been the go-to for strapping a camera to your helmet and hoping for the best. But the company's latest announcement signals something more ambitious - a genuine push into professional-grade video territory.
Meet the Mission 1 lineup: three new action cameras built around a 50-megapixel, 1-inch-type sensor and GoPro's brand new in-house GP3 processor. That sensor size is a significant jump for the brand, putting it closer to what you'd find in a high-end mirrorless camera than a traditional action cam.

Three tiers, two launch windows
The range splits into a base Mission 1, a step-up Mission 1 Pro, and a flagship Mission 1 Pro ILS - with the first two hitting shelves on May 28th. The Pro ILS comes later and is the real headline-grabber: it supports interchangeable Micro Four Thirds lenses, a feature borrowed straight from the world of dedicated cinema cameras.
That's a pretty bold move. Micro Four Thirds is a mature, well-loved lens ecosystem used by photographers and videographers who care deeply about image quality and creative control. Bringing that into an action camera form factor opens up possibilities that didn't really exist before in this category.

Why this matters beyond the spec sheet
For casual users, the base Mission 1 will likely do everything you need and then some. But the Pro ILS feels aimed squarely at a growing group of creators - travel filmmakers, outdoor content creators, documentary shooters - who've always had to choose between portability and image quality. This camera is making the case that you don't have to.
Pricing hasn't been confirmed yet, which means we're all just going to have to sit with the anticipation for now. But given the hardware on offer, expect these to land at a premium compared to GoPro's existing lineup.

If the Mission 1 delivers on its promise, it could redefine what people expect from an action camera - and maybe nudge a few mirrorless shooters into rethinking what they carry on their next adventure.
