A 20-year-old man is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's San Francisco home in the early hours of Friday morning, according to authorities cited by Fast Company.
Daniel Moreno-Gama allegedly hurled the incendiary device at around 4 a.m., setting an exterior gate at Altman's property on fire before fleeing on foot. The attack didn't stop there. Less than an hour later, Moreno-Gama allegedly made his way to OpenAI's headquarters, located roughly three miles away.
A premeditated journey
What makes the case especially alarming is the apparent premeditation involved. Authorities say Moreno-Gama traveled all the way from Texas to San Francisco with the stated intention of killing Altman. Investigators also note that he had previously written about AI's purported risks to humanity - suggesting his motivations were ideological, rooted in fears about artificial intelligence and its impact on the world.
AI anxiety turned dangerous
The incident is a stark and unsettling reminder that public discourse around AI - often heated and polarizing - can have real-world consequences. Debates about the existential risks of artificial intelligence have become increasingly mainstream, drawing in everyone from tech researchers to online communities with more extreme views. While the vast majority of people concerned about AI's trajectory channel that worry into conversation and advocacy, this case represents a deeply troubling outlier.
Sam Altman has been one of the most prominent faces of the AI boom, frequently appearing in media and before governments to discuss both the promise and the risks of the technology his company is helping to build. That visibility, it seems, also comes with a personal cost.
Moreno-Gama was charged with attempted murder following his arrest. No injuries were reported as a result of the attack on Altman's home.
The case is still developing, and authorities have not released further details about what, if anything, occurred at the OpenAI headquarters location.
