Refresh rates and resolutions have always been the classic gaming monitor trade-off, like choosing between sleep and a social life. But LG just said 'actually, no' and announced the UltraGear 25G590B - the first monitor to hit 1000Hz at a full 1080p resolution.

Until now, every 1000Hz display we've seen has topped out at 720p. Which, fine, technically fast - but also technically the resolution your dad watches YouTube at. LG's new 24.5-inch IPS panel finally breaks that ceiling, delivering 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at a refresh rate so high it makes your eyeballs feel inadequate.

Why does 1000Hz even matter?

Here's the thing - most humans can't consciously perceive the difference between 500Hz and 1000Hz. But in competitive esports, we're not really talking about what you see, we're talking about input latency, motion clarity, and the razor-thin margins between winning and being absolutely destroyed by a 14-year-old with better aim.

LG is explicitly pitching this thing at esports competitors - particularly FPS players - where every millisecond of visual information can mean the difference between a clutch play and a very embarrassing kill cam. The monitor essentially shows the world more accurately and more often, so fast-moving targets appear sharper and your reactions can catch up to your intentions.

The Excel mention is doing a lot of heavy lifting here

According to The Verge's report, LG's pitch includes esports players whether they're grinding an FPS or - and this is real - playing Excel. Competitive Excel. It's a thing. And apparently it needs 1000Hz to truly flourish. We don't make the news, folks, we just report it.

Should you care?

If you're a casual gamer who enjoys story-driven adventures at 60fps on a couch, absolutely not. Go touch grass, this monitor is not for you, and that's completely fine.

But if you're the kind of person who already knows their polling rate, has opinions about anti-ghosting technology, and has genuinely blamed a 144Hz monitor for a loss - LG is basically building the monitor you've been screaming into the void about.

The UltraGear 25G590B is set to release this year. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but given that it's a first-of-its-kind IPS panel with specs that would make a benchmarking spreadsheet blush, maybe start saving now.
