Just when you thought your 65-inch OLED was safe from the brain-rotting pull of 15-second vertical videos, Google has other plans for you.

According to The Verge, Google is rolling out a brand new "Short videos for you" row directly on the Google TV homepage. No app required. No extra steps. Just an algorithmically curated feed of bite-sized content sitting right there between your Netflix recommendations and whatever movie you've been meaning to watch for three months.

So what's actually happening here?

The update is expected to hit Google TV devices in the US sometime this summer, though Google hasn't committed to a specific date. The row will be personalized, meaning it'll serve you Shorts based on your viewing habits - which is either a dream or a nightmare depending on how well Google knows you at this point.

The whole point seems to be frictionless access. Right now, watching Shorts on a TV means opening the YouTube app, navigating to the Shorts tab, and squinting at vertical video on a horizontal screen like some kind of digital weirdo. This skips all of that and drops the content right on your homescreen.

Why this is kind of a big deal (even if you don't want it to be)

Here's the thing - TV manufacturers and streaming platforms have been desperately trying to crack the short-form video nut on big screens for a while now. TikTok has a TV app. Instagram Reels technically works on some devices. But none of them have the homepage real estate that Google TV is now handing to Shorts.

By embedding Shorts directly into the homescreen feed, Google is essentially betting that the "just one more" dopamine loop that works so well on phones will translate to the couch. And honestly? They're probably right. We've all lost 45 minutes to Shorts when we only meant to check one video.

The part where we pretend to be concerned

There's a reasonable argument that your TV's homescreen is already a cluttered mess of streaming service logos screaming for your attention. Adding a personalized Shorts carousel to that chaos is either a genius quality-of-life feature or the final nail in the coffin of actually sitting down to watch a full film like a functioning adult.

Probably both, if we're being honest.

The rollout is US-only for now, hitting Google TV devices this summer. No word yet on whether you'll be able to hide the row if you're one of those people with self-control.
