If you've been happily paying for an ad-free YouTube experience, brace yourself: YouTube Premium has quietly gotten pricier in the US, and the increases are nothing to shrug at.
According to The Verge, the standard Individual plan now runs $15.99 per month, up from $13.99 - a $2 jump. The Family plan, which covers up to five people, has climbed to $26.99 per month, a full $4 more than its previous $22.99 price tag. Even the lighter-tier Premium Lite option isn't spared, rising from $7.99 to $8.99 monthly.

Who's affected and when
The new pricing is already in effect for anyone signing up fresh. If you're an existing subscriber, the rollout is happening now - so don't be surprised when your next billing statement looks a little different.
Premium Lite, for the uninitiated, removes most ads but doesn't bundle in YouTube Music, making it the budget-friendlier pick for people who just want a cleaner viewing experience without the full suite of perks.

Is it still worth it?
That depends entirely on how much of your life happens on YouTube. For heavy users - think daily commuters watching video essays, fitness fans following workout channels, or anyone who uses YouTube Music as their primary streaming service - the all-in Individual plan still packs real value. Background play, offline downloads, and no ads across the whole platform add up.
But for more casual viewers? The math gets harder to justify. At $15.99 a month, you're approaching the cost of other major streaming subscriptions that offer original programming on top of their libraries.

The price hike also lands at an interesting moment. Streaming fatigue is real, and subscription costs across the board have been creeping upward industry-wide. YouTube Premium is a useful service, but it's worth taking a moment to ask whether you're actually getting $16 worth of value out of it each month - or whether your viewing habits have shifted enough that free, ad-supported YouTube (or even Premium Lite) would serve you just as well.
Either way, the choice just got a little more deliberate.
