Dating apps have tried a lot of things to make online romance less of a dumpster fire. Personality prompts. Video intros. The eternal "looking for something real" checkbox. And now, Hinge has a new idea: a little purple heartbeat badge called Signals, which is essentially a gold star for not being terrible.
So what even is this thing?
As reported by Mashable, Hinge has officially launched Signals - a purple heartbeat icon that appears on a user's profile. The badge is designed to indicate good dating behavior on the app. Some users had already been spotting it before the official rollout, which, yes, means people were walking around with mystery purple symbols on their profiles and presumably asking "wait, what does this mean?" on Reddit.

A badge for being a decent human being
Here's the part that's both wholesome and slightly unhinged (no pun intended): we now live in a world where apps need to formally signal that someone is behaving like a reasonable adult in the dating pool. It's the participation trophy of romance, except somehow it might actually work.
Think about it. The bar for online dating has historically been... on the floor. A badge that says "this person reads messages and doesn't ghost into the void" could genuinely be the competitive advantage nobody knew they needed. Slap that purple heartbeat on your profile and suddenly you're the mature one in the room.

Will it actually matter?
The cynical read here is that Signals is mostly a gamification trick - something to nudge users into more engagement and better app etiquette so Hinge's metrics look good. The optimistic read is that visible social accountability actually shapes behavior. Make people feel rewarded for being good daters, and maybe they'll keep being good daters.
Neither reading is wrong, by the way. Both can be true at the same time, which is very much a thing adults learn on their dating journeys.

The bottom line
Whether Signals becomes the new "verified" checkmark for emotionally available people or quietly fades into app feature purgatory, it's at least an interesting experiment. Dating apps are essentially petri dishes for human behavior at this point, and Hinge is trying to culture something more civilized.
Wear that purple heartbeat with pride, champ. You've earned it by simply not being awful. The bar is low, but hey - it's a start.
